Tyler Perry was born Emmitt Perry Jr. in New Orleans on September 14, 1969. His father was abusive to him, leading Tyler to suffer depression as a teenager. He began writing letters to himself as a form of self-therapy, and adapted them into a play, I Know I’ve Been Changed. Its initial production was a flop, but after many re-writes, it was restaged to a sell-out audience. His breakthrough film production was Diary of a Mad Black Woman, followed by Madea’s Family Reunion (and many Madea sequels). He produced/directed/acted in Why Did I Get Married?, Meet the Browns, I Can Do Bad All By Myself and The Single Mom’s Club (among many). His TV series include House of Payne, For Better or Worse and The Haves and the Have Nots. He has also acted in Star Trek, Gone Girl and Vice. His current production is A Madea Family Funeral.
